Brief content of the article:
The authors made an attempt to quantify the effect of extra fat intake on fibre utilization in horses. Eight mature trotting horses were given four diets. The concentrates contained 30, 50, 77 or 108 g EE/ Kg DM of soybean oil. Extra fat intake reduced apparent protein and NFE digestibility, but raised apparent fat digestibility. Although the results hold specifically for the experimental conditions of this study, the authors suggest that the fat content of the diet may influence macronutrient utilization which might have consequences for practical horse feeding.
