The authors review current literature on lactate and monocarboxylate transporters with special reference to horses. The formation of lactate in muscle, effects of lactate on muscle metabolism, Transport of lactate from muscle, distribution of lactate in blood, elimination of lactate during exercise and recovery and lactate as marker of performance are subsequently discussed in this review.
