Glycemic index of a meal fed before exercise alters substrate use and glucose flux in exercising horses

The authors studied the effect on glycemic index in 6 adult horses who ran at 50% of maximal rate of oxygen consumption for 60 minutes after an 18 hours fasting period and were (a) fed corn or alfalfa (b) or not fed (c) before exercise. Plasma glucose, serum insulin, nonesterified fatty acids, serum glycerol, acid concentration and muscle utilization were measured.
