Antioxidant parameters of horses according to age, sex, breed and environment

As there is no comprehensive and uniform view on issues concerning the anti-oxidant status in horses this study was executed to estimate anti-oxidant parameters in horses of different age, sex, breed and environment. Further the relation between oxidants was studied. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), gluthatione peroxidase (GSH-px), total antioxidant status (TAS), cerloplasmin (CP), bilirubin, uric acid, zinc, copper and selenium were determined in blood of 80 clinically healthy horses. Antioxidant parameters significantly varied between different environments or different breed and sex and a correlation was observed between enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants.
