Anti-oxidant systems and lymphocyte proliferation in the horse, sheep and dog.

The aim of this study was to analyse anti-oxidant systems of lymphocytes in order to confirm the differences found in the erythrocytes from different animal species. Further, it was determined whether such differences are related to the proliferative capacity of lymphocytes. For that, lymphocyte gluthatione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity, plasmatic gluthathione levels (GSH) and the effect of H2O2 on the responsiveness of lymphocytes to proliferative stimuli was measured. Horses displayed intermediate values for GSHPx and GSH compared to sheep and dog. The effect of H2O2 inhibited the proliferative capacity of lymphocytes but the rates of inhibition were different between species.
