The authors studied the concentrations of plasma metabolites related to bone modelling in various horse breeds (Warmblood, Ardennes breed) and age groups and in horses offered a calcium-deficient diet. Bone formation was evaluated by bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), total alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin. Bone resorption was assessed by hydroxyproline. Total calcium, ionized calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D metabolites were measured. Bone marker concentration was affected by age and breed. After correction of the calcium deficient diet, inconsistent effects at plasma level were found.
