Effects of excess calories by feeding fat on lipid metabolism of Shetland ponies (German article)
Brief content of the article
The authors studied the influence of overweight and dietary fat supplementation on lipid and insulin glucose metabolism of Shetland ponies. The ponies were fed a fat rich (with a high energy density) or a control diet (carbohadrate rich diet). The ponies were fed these diets for 9 months untill an overweight of 15% occurred. Oral glucose tolerance tests followed by measures of plasma -triglyceride, glucose, insulin and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were executed. It appeared that fat feeding had a positive effect on the triglyceride clearance of overweight Shetland ponies.
Keywords: hyperlipaemia; lipid metabolism; glucose tolerance; insulin.
