Effects of ribose supplementation on selected metabolic measurements and performance in maximally exercising Thoroughbreds.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of ribose supplementation on blood ammonia-N, plasma lactic acid, plasma glucose, volume of oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate, and performance in Thoroughbred geldings performing a maximal exercise test (SET). The hypothesis tested by the researchers was that ribose supplementation would decrease ammonia-N and lactic acid accumulation during exercise and improve performance. The researchers used 8 thoroughbreds in their experiment which were subjected to two treatments; a glucose (0.15 g glucose/kg BW) and a ribose supplemented group (0.15 g ribose/kg BW) topdressed on the feed twice daily. The results of this experiment indicated that ribose supplementation did not influence blood ammonia-N, plasma lactic acid, plasma glucose, VO2, heart rate or performance during the SET or during the first 30 minutes of recovery.
