Equine gastric ulcer syndrome represents a major health problem in foals and adult performance horses. Although acid injury (hydrochloric acid, volatile fatty acids, and bile acids) has been implicated as a cause of equine gastric ulcer syndrome, several risk factors like nutrition, stress, racing, stall confinement or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use have been identified. Among feeding practice, intermittent feeding and a high energy diet is thought to be implicated in the development of ulcerogenic damage. This article provide a current opinion on nutritional risk factors in gastric ulcer syndrome in horses. The authors suggested that the amount of concentrate per feeding should not exceed 0.4 kg/ 100 kg body weight to prevent extensive gastric filling. The minimal amount of roughage that should be provided is 1 kg/ 100 kg body weight. Further long periods of feed deprivation should be prevented and feeding 3-5 hours before training seems an appropriate choice in a preventive nutritional strategy of gastric ulcers.
