The authors studied the effect of chronic, repetitive high intensity exercise on anaerobic capacity of standardbred horses deconditioned by twelve weeks of stall rest. After that, the horses were used in a regular high intensity exercise schedule for 10 weeks and accumulated oxygen deficit and various other respiratory parameters were measured (Vo2max, muscle glycogen, blood lactate conc.). The authors concluded that the anaerobic capacity of horses can be increased by an appropriate conditioning programme that includes regular, high intensity exercise. The authors, concluded further that the anaerobic capacity did not reflect blood lactate concentrations under various exercise conditions.
