Effects of varying levels of phytase supplementation on dry matter and phosphorus digestibility in horses fed a common textured ration.

Published: 2003-01-31

Brief content of the article
The effect of phytase supplementation on dry mater and phosphorus (P) digestibility was studied in mature horses. They were fed a 0, 300, 600 and 900 FTU/kg added to the basal ration in a a 4x4 Latin square design experiment. The basal ration consisted of a textured concentrate of rolled corn, oats, and soybean meal fed in a 50:50 ratio with native prairy grass hay. Total feces and urine were collected during a 72-hour colection period. Feed samples were collected randomly during the trial. The results showed no significant difference in feacal output, dry matter digestibility and urinary output and P-digestibility was also not improved.
