Brief content of the article: The authors studied the effect of a short time endurance ride in 7 well trained endurance horses of the Swiss Endurance Team on the plasma Mgtot, Mgion, Catot, Caion and Mgery. PTH and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D were also measured. The horses were fed exessive amounts of dietary magnesium before and during the ride. The authors found no major downward changes in the plasma Mg and Ca levels during the ride. PTH and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D were not increased.The authors conclude that it is not easy to give recommendations for magnesium supplementation before and during endurance rides, although it seems to be beneficial in some instances in order to prevent low ionic plasma values of Mg and Ca..
