Antioxidant supplementation in horses affected by recurrent airway obstruction.

This study investigated the effects of a supplement containing a combination of different antioxidants on plasma- and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF)-antioxidant concentrations and on exercise-induced alterations in systemic and pulmonary oxidative stress. The authors concluded that oral antioxidant supplementation significantly elevated plasma ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol in horses suffering from recurrent airway obstruction. The authors observed further that the concentration of glutathione in BALF correlated with the concentrations of oxidized glutathione in BALF from RAO-affected horses. The authors suggested that this observation may reflect a protective compensatory mechanism to an oxidant load.
