Fructooligosaccharide supplementation in the yearling horse: effects on fecal pH, microbial content, and volatile fatty acid concentrations

These authors supplemented short chain fructooligosaccherides (FOS) to the diets of nine quarterhorses ranging in age from 489 to 539 days. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of dietary FOS on the faecal responses in terms of pH, the microbial population, and VFA concentrations. Therefore, a control diet (no FOS), a low FOS diet and a high FOS diet were fed. Fecal pH lowered with increasing FOS intake but fecal consistency was not altered. The fecal population of lactobacilli was not altered but the number of E coli was decreased in the low FOS but not in the high FOS group compared to the control group. Fecal acetate, proprionate, butyrate, total VFA and Lactate increased with increasing FOS concentration of the diet. A full abstract can be found on Pubmed or http://www.animal-science.org.
