Trend in ash and mineral element content of milk from Haflinger nursing mares throughout six lactation months.

Effects of lactation duration were investigated on contents of ash and minerals in milk from 10 Haflinger nursing mares. The mares (400-540 kg live wt; 4-12 parities) were reared in a stud in Brescia province, northern Italy. The researchers took 80 milk samples by hand milking of 1 gland on days 4, 20, 40, 60, 80, 120, 150 and 180 postpartum. The authors observed that from days 4-180 postpartum, ash contents decreased significantly from 0.58 to 0.28 g/100 g of milk. In the same period, contents of several mineral elements also decreased significantly (Ca; P ; Mg; K ; Na and Cl-). Decreases in ash and mineral contents followed a curvilinear pattern relative to days of lactation that was well described by cubic equations.
