For foals to be protected immunologically just after birth, immunoglobulin G (IgG) needs to be ingested and absorbed. The objective of the authors was to determine the effect of supplementing the diet of pregnant mares rich in either oleic acid or alpha-linolenic acid on the production of colostral IgG, the transfer of IgG to the foal and the fatty acid compositions of mammary secretions and foal plasma. The main conclusion was that ingestion of the fatty acid C18:3 did not improve the transfer of IgG postpartum to foals. The authors observed effects on mammary excretions of fatty acids and plasma fatty acid concentrations.
