The bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate after oral and intravenous single dose administration in the horse
Brief content of the article
The purpose of this study was to determine if glucosamine hydrochlorideand low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate are absorbed after oral administration to horses. The bioavailability of low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate was obtained by quantifying the total disaccharides found in the plasma following chondroitinase ABC digestion. The authors observed that glucosamine was absorbed to a limited extent and that chondroitin sulfate was absorbed to a higher extent compared with glucosamine. The main conclusion of the authors was that this study provides the first report of the bioavailability of orally administered glucosamine and low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate in the horse.
