Role of dietary energy source in the expression of chronic exertional myopathies in horses

The author reviews the role of dietary energy source two variants of a common muscle disorder (exertional rhabdomyolysis, ER) that is characterized by the development of pain and stiffness during and after exercise. Two heritable forms of chronic ER have been identified: polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) and recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER). PSS is a condition, which is prevalent in quarter horses and related breeds, but also reported to occur in other breeds. RER is prevalent in thoroughbreds. Although PSSM and RER have a different cause, there is evidence that feeding diets rich in hydrolysable carbohydrates (like starch and simple sugars) enhances the onset of these disorders. The author concludes that feeding diets with decreased digestible energy from hydrolysable carbohydrate and substitution with alternative energy sources, such as vegetable oils and fats, beetpulp and soybean hulls, decreases the frequency and severity of episodes of exertional rhabdomyolysis.
